Statement by the Interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP

Ottawa - 2010-01-26

Mr. Ian McPhail, Q.C., Interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP (CPC), today released a statement regarding his recent appointment:

"I have been given a one-year mandate to ensure that the fine work of the Commission continues. This is exactly what I will do.

My predecessor left me with an extremely effective, well-run organization. The role of the Commission is very clear – as is my role. The public, and indeed RCMP members, should not expect anything to change in terms of the Commission's approach to managing complaints files.

The Commission will continue to fairly and impartially accept and review public complaints made about the conduct of RCMP members. Moreover, I will exercise my full powers as acting Chair in the public interest where and when necessary.

Public accountability for all decisions and actions of the Commission will remain paramount to me and my staff.

I have a very experienced team to draw upon for any advice and guidance that I may need."
